Tips to Help Fliers Travellers Breeze Through Security

So you’ve taken the time to carefully wrap that perfect gift for a loved one in festive paper, topped by an elegant bow. But in a disastrous turn of events, when going through airport security, TSA agents decide to examine that present a little closer … and your carefully prepared masterpiece of gift-wrapping is destroyed.

That is why Bob Burns of the TSA Social Media Team said in his “2015 Travel Tips” blog post “wrapped gifts are allowed, but not encouraged,” explaining, “we might have to unwrap gifts. If there’s something in the gift that needs to be inspected, we may have to open it. Our officers try their best not to mangle the giftwrap, but it’s not a guarantee.”

Plus, this protracted giftwrap-jockeying “slows down the line for everybody else,” Burns said.

You could also take the advice of Travel + Leisure and ship the gifts.

Speaking of glacial security lines, the Manchester Evening News cited estimates by “airport number crunchers,” who stated that it takes about a minute per passenger to remove all winter layers at the checkpoint.

Unfortunately, “winter weather fashion has a surprisingly big impact on airport security, slowing down the screening process and causing avoidable extra waiting times.”

We also advise that fliers “take off your coats, extra layers, big boots, scarves and hats when you are in the security queue itself so you can put it straight in the tray for screening.”
