Are you familiar with the term “cultural tourism”?
Cultural tourism relates to a city’s impressive collections of art, fascinating architecture, age-old customs, impeccable hospitality, authentic cuisines, thriving nightlife, and much, much more. These captivating aspects of a destination make up the culture of a place that plays an influential part in the popularity of a particular destination.
The culture of a country is what makes it unique. Visiting museums, experiencing its traditions, visiting local restaurants, trying its cuisine, and strolling through its history are the best ways to discover a country. And that, is exactly what cultural tourism is all about.
Unlike sun and beach vacations where the main reason for the vacation is rest and relaxation, the purpose of a cultural tour is to get to know the history, art, and people of a place. When you taste the food, discover its customs, and experience these things firsthand, it gives you a better perspective and unique way of seeing the world.
What Types of Cultural Tourism Can You Experience?
Cultural tourism is as diverse as culture itself in that it can embrace any activity connected with, or peculiar to, a country, area, city, or town. It can include art, cinema, language, sport, religion, architecture, gastronomy, nature, or any kind of folklore. But there are other much less conventional types of cultural tourism. Here are some examples:
Tombstone Tourism
A type of tourism that you may not have heard of is called “tombstone tourism.” This is not as morbid as you may think. There are many famous cemeteries around the world like those in Paris, London, and Buenos Aries. I have personally visited all these cemeteries and it was quite impressive.
The Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris is the most visited cemetery in the world. Over 800,000 persons are buried there including Morrison, Chopin, Moliere, Edith Piaf, Rossini, and Oscar Wilde.
Highgate Cemetery in north London, England has approximately 170,000 people buried in around 53,000 graves across the West Cemetery and the East Cemetery. Highgate Cemetery is notable both for some of the famous people buried including Karl Marx and George Michael. It is also a nature reserve.
Recoleta in Buenos Aires has over 2,000 visitors a day. It contains the remains of Eva Peron, presidents of Buenos Aires, and the granddaughter of Napoleon.
Movie Tourism
The Downton Abby tour in London is very popular where you can trace the footsteps of Lady Mary Crawley. You can also visit Highclere Castle, the real-life Downton Abbey, to explore its above-stairs rooms and gardens.
There are also tours for fans of the Lord of the Rings saga, based on J.R. Tolkien's book and brought to the screen by Peter Jackson. The activities include visits to the places where the film scenes were shot, most of them in New Zealand. A similar tour is being offered in cities like Dubrovnik (Croatia), Belfast (Northern Ireland) and Reykjavik (Iceland) where scenes from the Game of Thrones series were filmed.
War Tourism
War tourism is the practice of visiting a place that has been devastated by war many years after the conflict has ceased. War museums in these places are extremely popular locations for tourists who are intrigued by war.
There are popular war tourist locations all over the world from Germany to the Far East. Some popular war locations are France, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Bangkok.
