I don’t believe there is a “right way” or “wrong way” to travel and I do think everyone should be free to travel however they wish. However, one thing is for sure, if you want your travel to be more authentic and immersive you must improve your travel experience. This week we are going to discuss things that you should do to make sure you have the best travel experience possible.
1. Be a Curious Traveler
When you allow yourself to become curious you enjoy your travel experience in a more child-like manner, and you see things in a different way. Approaching travel with more curiosity is a key to improving your travel experience.
Try seeking out and finding opportunities around you. One way to do this is to pretend that you live in that destination and that you are trying to become accustomed to the city.
2. Be Respectful of the Culture
While visiting a foreign destination, remember that people live and work there. Keeping an open mind allows you to have an enjoyable time as you experience cultures and traditions that differ from your own. Being obnoxious, brash, rude, and insensitive to the people you meet can easily get you in trouble and put a damper on your trip.
Don’t judge other cultures and be respectful of people’s opinion. Remember to see value in everyone. This will also help you to become a better person.
3. Take Photos and Journal
During your travels you will take lots of photos because you do not want your amazing moments to be forgotten. Take as many pictures and video as you like. But remember, when taking pictures, you should always be thoughtful about when a photo or video is or isn't appropriate. If you are in doubt, kindly ask the person for permission to take their picture and respect their answer.
While you want to take photos and videos on your trip, writing about your experience every day (or every week for longer trips) can help you remember the experience even years later.
4. Take the Time to Learn the Language
Learning the language or at least a few words in the local language gets you connected to your surroundings easier. It tells the locals that you respect their culture and are willing to learn. I usually try to learn a few words in the language like ‘hello’, ‘thank you’, “goodbye”, and ‘excuse me’ in every country I visit.
5. Eat the Local Foods
There are so many dishes in other countries that you would never try if you do not travel. Traveling somewhere new opens your eyes and your taste buds to a whole new range of authentic flavors and foods that you would have otherwise missed. Local dishes are the window to another culture. When traveling try to eat or at least try the local foods. Even if you end up hating it, at least you tried. Trying local food is an essential part of the travel experience.
6. Embrace the Culture
Explore the culture of a place—whether it’s by learning history, admiring architecture, visiting the museums, relishing the arts, or just appreciating the magical moments of everyday life. Experience everything, feel the air, the sun beaming on your face, the smiles of the people, the sounds of the street, see the beauty and variety of your surroundings. Take in all that the country has to offer and deeply appreciate the experience of being there.
7. Be an Early Riser
Yes, I know you may want to sleep in late since you are on vacation, but if you are traveling during peak season, you may have to get up early to avoid the crowds. By getting up early you avoid the slow-moving families, long lines, and lots of stress.
8. Put Down the Map and Get Lost
Some of the most memorable experiences you will have when traveling is when you find places that you did not expect to find. The benefit of planning travel is to make sure that you see everything that you want to see and to have a worry-free vacation but getting lost can be fun. While it is good to organize your day, turning left instead of right will help you discover places you didn’t know existed, from fascinating neighborhoods to quiet little squares that may end up becoming one of your favorite spots.
9. Choose Unexpected Destinations
Step outside your comfort zone and don’t choose ordinary or conventional destinations to visit. Exposing yourself to less familiar destinations and new experiences can help you gain new perspectives on your everyday life and a new attitude toward problems.
10. Swap Big Cities for Small Towns
If you have already visited large European cities like Paris, Rome, and London, why not be brave and venture beyond the beaten path and discover the smaller cities and towns? After a while, the experiences that you have in the big cities will all begin to blend together. So do not confine yourself to just big cities.
11. Explore the Night Scene
Traveling is a fun and eye-opening experience. But no matter where you visit, there’s one aspect of a country that you should not miss and that is the nightlife. A lot of people find the idea of going to foreign clubs and bars a little intimidating, especially if they don’t speak the local language or are not used to going out at night. Also, most people associate nightlife with partying but there is so much more to getting out at night.
For example, you can visit night markets and meet the locals getting off from work. You also get to experience the local restaurants at night and see how the locals dine. Mingling with the locals at night and seeing the nighttime activities is one of the best ways to fully embrace the spirit of a country.
12. Indulge in the Finer Things You Would Not Normally Do
How about going to a chateau for wine-tasting? Even if you are not a drinker, indulge yourself in a full day of wine tasting in the French countryside, Australia, or South Africa. You will be surprised how much you will enjoy the day and how much you will learn about the wine-making process and impressive chateaus.
13. Go to the Same Place at Different Times of the Day
If you like taking photos, try re-visiting the same place at a different time of day to see how this changes your photo. You may be surprised at the different types of pictures you get. The view at sunset may be quite different from the view during the day.
14. Don’t Let Money Be a Factor
If you have always wanted to visit a destination but did not visit because you thought it was too expensive, go ahead and make that trip. For example, traveling to the Maldives may be an expensive trip, and you may not visit because of the cost. If it is a place you have always wanted to go, go ahead and make that trip. It may be expensive, but worth it. Traveling is all about experiences and traveling can be expensive. Yes, you may spend more money, but that money will be returned to you in the quality of the experiences.
15. Buy Souvenirs You Will Keep
When shopping in a foreign country, buy souvenirs that you like and will keep. I do not buy as many souvenirs that I used to buy, but what I do buy for myself and my friends, are things that I like and treasure.
16. Live Each Day Like It’s Your Last
Travel opens your minds and hearts to some of the most incredible moments of our lives. Make the most of every day while on vacation so that you can go home with memories that last a lifetime.
Final Thoughts
You always want to make the most of your time away. Remember to always strive for authenticity and avoid the things you could do back home. Always delve deep into the culture that surrounds you, enjoy the people, enjoy the food and most of all have fun!
