With the vaccine rollout picking up pace, Americans are starting to feel more cautiously optimistic about the prospect of traveling again.
Travel advisors like myself and others in the travel industry are experiencing a surge in travel bookings. Those who love to travel have been feeling a sense of wanderlust that has been building for the past year. It is natural that we want to explore new places and destinations after spending so much time at home. This new phenomenon is called “revenge travel.”
You may be asking yourself what exactly does “revenge travel” mean and how might it manifest? I am going to share my thoughts about “revenge travel” and how “revenge travel” may affect your future vacation plans.
What is “Revenge Travel’?
The term “revenge travel” may sound silly but it refers to a huge increase in travel as travel becomes safer and more countries start opening their doors. Many Americans, as well as people around the world, have had to cancel, change, or alter their vacation plans. Because we have stayed home so long everyone is looking to satisfy their wanderlust at the same time. The term is also retribution against Covid-19. Covid-19 is finally losing its power to control our lives, including canceling our travel plans.
If vaccination rates continue to increase and Covid-19 cases continue to decrease, many travel experts predict many Americans will book more trips than they did before the pandemic. They are looking to make up for lost vacation time and to reconnect with friends and family.
After being confined at home and not traveling for over a year, “revenge travel” is essentially a jump back into the world. It’s a visceral response to pent-up travel demand.
While “revenge travel” is the hot new term, it explains exactly what travelers have been saying since the pandemic started. Travelers will no longer take for granted that flights will be readily available, and that countries are waiting at the border with open arms to greet us. We will make up for the lost vacation time and experiences with a vengeance.
Travel Experts are Expecting a Boom in Travel
So many people throughout the Covid-19 pandemic have experienced trauma, frustration and made so many sacrifices. The sudden surge in vaccinations across the country is trailblazing a sense of urgency, and impatience, to travel once again.
I have personally noticed an increase in travel bookings, as people are eager to spend the miles, points and vouchers that have accumulated and gone unused over the past year.
I am also seeing a large increase in family reunion bookings, holiday travel, graduation celebrations and girlfriend getaways. Brides are booking destination weddings and bachelor and bachelorette celebrations. This increase in bookings shows us that families and friends are looking forward to reconnecting after so much time spent apart. They are coming together for the holidays and other celebrations since so many travel plans were canceled in 2020.
TSA has reported that they have been screening over 1 million passengers a day since mid-February, which is an increase over the general pandemic low. TSA is also looking to hire over 6,000 screening officers for the anticipated summer rush. After being largely confined to our homes for an entire year, Americans are ready to experience new places, food, and activities again. We are finally beginning to feel safe enough to travel.
People Want Rest, Relaxation and Time Outdoors
I see my clients getting overly excited about booking all-inclusive resorts to sun and sand destinations like Jamaica, Cabo, Cancun, Bahamas, and Punta Cana. These islands are also popular because of their short flight time which also minimizes your risk.
Everyone has had a hard time this year and we are all craving new cultures, experiences, and adventures. We all want and deserve a much-needed break. We want to sit on a beautiful beach, feel the sand between our toes, the sun beaming down on our face, and sip on exotic cocktails. We will sit back on the beach and reminisce about the people we have lost and missed during the pandemic.
Outdoor Adventure and Activity
Another travel trend prediction is continued interest in outdoor adventures and activity due to their safety.
People are most excited to “revenge travel” to places where they can spend a lot of time outdoors without a mask. This includes lakes, beaches, places with a lot of hiking such as national and state parks, and camping destinations. They are looking for places with a lot of space.
Covid-19 spreads far less outside compared to indoors, so a beach vacation or camping trip still allows for adequate social distancing. While Covid-19 vaccines also prevent infection and spreading to others, some people still like the added security that the outdoors provide. Data suggests Covid-19 vaccines can reduce transmission of the coronavirus, and research is still ongoing.
Vacation Safely in the United States
It has also been noted that most “revenge travel” in the next few months will likely take place in the United States. As of today, there are still some foreign countries that are not permitting United States citizens to visit. Many of these countries have Covid-19 testing requirements in place that can be quite extensive. You will need PCR tests and some countries are still requiring you to quarantine upon arrival. There may also be random tests done upon arrival in your destination.
There is an increased interest in driving to state and national parks and along the coastlines. However, with the increase of everyone getting vaccinated, the desire to visit friends and relatives will drive traffic to all destinations as families and loved ones reconnect.
If you are interested in going beyond the continental U.S. Americans will probably still play it safe. That is why there is an increase in planning trips to destinations like Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This is because people want to go as far away as they can get without leaving the country.
Splurge on Travel
After more than a year of restrictions, many travelers will feel more inclined to splurge and treat themselves when they are able to safely travel again.
After more than a year of restrictions, many “vengeful” travelers may feel more inclined to splurge and treat themselves when leisure travel becomes an option again.
Travelers are prepared to spend more on their travel experiences than they would have pre-COVID. Clients are requesting upgraded airfare, more excursions, better rooms, and longer vacations. Travelers are determined to compensate for the vacation time that they lost over the past year. Americans are excited about being able to treat themselves and their loved ones to special trips once they can travel safely.
I have also noticed that travelers are beginning to book their bucket-list vacations. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is not to take anything for granted.
While travel has changed, the desire to discover the world and have experiences will continue. Time spent under severe travel restrictions has increased the value of travel in people’s minds, and we will all approach travel with a greater appreciation.
Book Early and Plan Ahead
One of the best ways to prepare for the influx in travel is by booking ahead, since many favorite places to travel may already be fully booked. Restrictions are easing up, but to make matters more complicated, social distancing will likely still be in effect, limiting the number of travel options and services. Airlines, hotels, tour operators and facilities may not be at full capacity just yet. Make sure you do not miss out on your desired destination, by booking early and planning ahead.
Final Thoughts
While it’s fun to fantasize about traveling the world again, it’s important to consider more immediate priorities like health, safety, and financial wellbeing as we continue to navigate the pandemic.
With so many people still furloughed or unemployed, and with so many people experiencing financial challenges at some point throughout the past year, “revenge travel” for many is a distant dream with job and food security a more real and urgent priority.
If you do find yourself in a position to travel, be mindful of health and safety measures when choosing a destination. Careful planning and budgeting go a long way. We all want to travel again as soon as possible, but we must travel safely.
Until then, stay inspired,
Cindy
